Set the stage for Act 4

    1. 1. Hamlet Act I   Characters: Hamlet Horatio Claudius Gertrude Polonius Laertes Ophelia Ghost of King Hamlet Summary   Hamlets friend Horatio believes he sees King Hamlets ghost. He isn’t sure if it him until he gets closer and realizes that yes, he was right and he must tell Hamlet right away. Inside the kingdom, Claudius and Gertrude are celebrating their marriage with the kingdom. Hamlet does not approve because it was just two months ago that his father dies and now his mother is married to the kings brother. Back outside Hamlet joins Horatio to watch for this supposed ghost. When it appears Hamlet is in complete shock because it beckons for him. He follows the ghost and it leads him to the middle of the woods. Hamlet realizes that it is his father and asks him why he has come. He explains to young Hamlet how he was murdered by Claudius with poison in his ear. He wants revenge upon the man that killed him so he tells Hamlet to kill him. Gertrude was also involved in this but the ghost says that she knew no better and to just leave her to the heavens. The ghost then leaves and Hamlet is alone plotting his revenge.

He gives him specific directions as to how to flow out his investigations. As Reynaldo leaves, Ophelia enters upset. She tells Polonius that Hamlet grabbed her, held her, and sighed heavily, but did not speak to her. Polonius says that Hamlet must be lovesick for Ophelia, because she has distanced herself from him ever since Polonius ordered her to do so. Polonius suspects that this lovesickness might be the cause of Hamlet’s strange behavior , and he hurries out to tell Claudius of his idea.               Rosencrantz and Guildenstern arrive to serve King Claudius. They are two friends of Hamlet from school. They have come in hopes that they will help cheer up Hamlet due to the loss of his father. Two men, Voltimand and Cornelious, explain to Claudius that the King of Norway has made sure Fortinbras will not attack. Polonius shows Claudius letters and poems Hamlet has written Ophelia and they come to the conclusion that he is in fact love sick for her. Polonius attempts to talk to Hamlet but Hamlet seems to be mad, he calls Polonius a “fishmonger” and acts as if he does not know who Polonius is. After Polonius leaves Guildenstern and Rosencrantz enter to speak with Hamlet. Hamlet is pleased to see them but he knows that the king and queen have sent for them.              The actors arrive and Hamlet asks them to tell a story of the fall of city Troy. He also picks a play for them to act out called “The Murder of Gonzago”. Hamlet secretly devises a plan to trap Claudius.

Act 3                         Characters: Hamlet Ophelia Polonius Claudius Horatio Gertrude Gonzago (king) Batista (Queen) Luciaunus (nephew) Rosencrants Guildenstern     Summary:             “To be or not to be that is the question.” This is a quote from Hamlet when he is deciding if he should live or die. At this point in the book we actually start to question if Hamlet is actually crazy or if he is acting. Polonius finds love notes from Hamlet to Ophelia. Polonius thinks that Hamlet is acting crazy because he is love sick and misses Ophelia. Polonius has Ophelia talk to Hamlet to see if he gets better after seeing her. When Hamlet and Ophelia start to talk Hamlet gets mad and starts to yell. Once Hamlet stops yelling he asks Ophelia where her father is. Hamlet has the players perform “The Murder of Gonzago.” Hamlet picks this play because he wants to expose Claudius and see how he reacts to the play. Once Claudius realizes what the play is about he stops the play. After the play is over Gertrude wants to talk to Hamlet. This is another one of Polonius’ plans. Polonius is going to hide behind Gertrude’s curtains and listen to what Hamlet and Gertrude are talking about. As Hamlet is walking to talk to his mother he runs into Claudius praying. Hamlet decides not to kill him because if Hamlet kills Claudius as he is praying he will go to heaven. Hamlet passes on the opportunity and goes to his mothers’ room. Hamlet becomes enraged while talking and starts to yell at Gertrude. Gertrude screams for help. Polonius tried to yell for help to but Hamlet stabs him through the curtain and kills him.
